Standard 1.2 Strategic Planning
Candidates facilitate the design, development, implementation, communication, and evaluation of technology-infused strategic plans. (PSC 1.2/ISTE 1b)
Artifact: SWOT Analysis
Reflection:
The artifact that I have chosen to demonstrate mastery of standard 1.2 is the SWOT plan that I created in ITEC 7410. This plan was the first step in the process of creating a technology planning project. It is an assessment of the current status of Marietta High School (MHS) of the implementation of ISTE’s Essential Conditions. The plan directly addresses Marietta High’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats as they relate to the use of technology in the school. In order to prepare the plan I collected data from various documents and synthesized the information into the template along with summaries of each essential condition.
This artifact demonstrates my ability to facilitate the design, implementation, communication, and evaluation of a technology strategic plan. Each of these abilities is apparent in the summaries of each of the essential conditions. The summaries demonstrate my ability to synthesize the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats into an analysis of the essential condition which helps reveal the logical next step in creating an action plan. Also in these summaries is evidence of my ability to implement the plan. Each of the summaries has suggestions and possible strategies for implementation. Evaluation is visible in the entire document. Each of the conditions demonstrates my ability to evaluate the essential condition and locate its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats at Marietta High.
An example of this is displayed in my summary of essential condition number three, planning for technology. In the template I address each category and in the summary I explain the current reality of Marietta’s technology plan. MHS’s technology plan and its school improvement plan at this present time do not include an instructional technology component. There is not a clear set of expectations in regard to instructional technology that has been presented to the staff. This is probably due to the fact that there is not a clear plan in place either at the district or school level. In order to strengthen instructional use of technology, a more solid plan needs to be put in place at the central office level and expectations spread to other schools in the district.
From completing this SWOT plan, I learned how to actively begin to make change in our technology use for instruction and I also believe I could apply this SWOT plan to many different policy areas in our school. If I could do anything different the next time I complete a SWOT, it would be to try to include more voices by distributing surveys to others that the policies effect.
The SWOT plan that I created will make an impact on school improvement, faculty development, and student learning. School improvement and faculty development will be impacted by the creation of a strong instructional technology plan. While student learning will be improved when there is a cohesive technology plan that contributes to their learning.
