Candidates effectively manage digital tools and resources within the context of student learning experiences. (PSC 3.2/ISTE 3b)
Artifacts: Engaged Learning Project
Reflection:
The artifact that best illustrates the effective management of digital tools and resources within the context of student learning experiences is my engaged learning project created in ITEC 7400. I created this project with a peer teacher for an International Baccalaureate class in the new IB Career Pathway Diploma program at Marietta High School. In this project, students were learning about ethics and decision making as it applies to them personally, professionally, culturally, and globally. The culminating project for this diploma program is a paper and or project in which the student addresses an ethical dilemma in his or her career pathway. A webquest was created on Weebly in order to house the many components of this project.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of this standard in the organization of the webquest and in the resources that are provided in the webquest. The webquest is organized in a scaffold sequence, in which the student learning builds through the process. Each page in the webquest touches on different aspects of ethics and helps the students completing this assignment to understand ethics from multiple perspectives and how ethics can be applied to many real world problems. The pages flow from the personal to global ethical dilemmas, thus allowing the students to see the connections between each area.
The resources provided in the webquest are a variety. I have included interactive games, newspaper articles, TED videos, journal articles, podcasts, political cartoons, database links, research paper resources, blogs, Web 2.0 tools, and several video tutorials. Each one of these resources was carefully reviewed and included based on its contribution to the learning outcome. The resources provided created the learning and the presentation of the learning.
From completing this artifact I learned that organization and selection of digital resources are essential components of creating an online learning project. The students who completed this webquests and these presentations were provided both a valuable and engaging learning experience. If I could change anything to improve the quality, I would make the webquest instructions more clear and I would encourage students to deviate from the webquest to create more learning opportunities for them as individuals.
This artifact impacted student learning. The students who participated in this project wrote thought provoking blogs and created terrific projects along the way. The learning was assessed with the rubrics that are included in the webquest.
