Standard 3.6 Selecting and Evaluating Digital Tools & Resources
Candidates collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the school technology infrastructure. (PSC 3.6/ISTE 3f)
Artifact: Evaluating an Emerging Technology
Reflection:
The artifact I chose to demonstrate mastery of standard 3.6 is the emerging technology presentation that I created in ITEC 7445. The purpose of the activity was to research, recommend, and implement policies, procedures, programs, and funding strategies to support implementation of an emerging technology that would complement the shared technology vision represented at Marietta High School.
Standard 3.6 requires the candidate to demonstrate the ability to collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources and to make sure the technology chosen is suitable and compatible with the school technology infrastructure. For this artifact, I worked with teachers in the science and math department at Marietta High School to find a program that would help them create video tutorials of their lessons, so students would have access for introductions to new materials and review of test materials. I did the research for various software programs and eliminated a few that I found would not work easily with the computers or the equipment we had available at school. My research began with the internet and going to educational technology blogs and reviews that I use often. Two of my favorite are Free Technology For Teachers and Techlearning. My goal was to find something easy to use, compatible with our equipment, inexpensive, and with good reviews from fellow educators. Once I completed the research the collaboration and evaluation began with the teachers. I presented my suggestions to a few of the teachers in these two departments and asked for their feedback. They tried out both options I suggested and came back with a resounding request for Camtasia. The reasons they gave for choosing Camtasia over SmartBoard Smart Capture were file formatting errors for posting videos on Aspen and Camtasia gave editing options.
Completing this artifact has taught me that my test sample of teachers when looking at new software or technology needs to be larger. Testing these two pieces of software I only asked 6 teachers to do a review. I only heard back from 3. Next time I will introduce the products to a larger group and make it easier for them to reply back with their findings.
The creation and implementation of this artifact has directly impacted student learning and professional development. The impact can be evaluated by assessments of the classes that were in the first tier of the implementation plan, physical science and 9th/10th grade math. Professional development impact can be measured by the amount of teachers that are actively creating video tutorials for flipping and posting video content on their school pages.
