Standard 2.8 Data Analysis
Candidates model and facilitate the effective use of digital tools and resources to systematically collect and analyze student achievement data, interpret results, communicate findings, and implement appropriate interventions to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning. Artifact: Data Overview
Reflection:
The data overview that I created this summer in ITEC 7305 is an excellent example of mastery of standard 2.8 data analysis. The data overview is a Knowmia presentation that I created to illustrate the current data available for Marietta High Schools 9th grade literature and composition EOCT scores. It contains ten charts of data and summaries of the findings in each of these charts. The data tells a story about the student scores on this summative assessment. The expectations for this overview is that the 9th grade literature and composition PLC teachers will be able to identify some overarching strengths and weaknesses that they may use to create an action plan to help address these concerns.
This overview demonstrates mastery of data analysis in several ways. First the overview displays my ability to model and facilitate the use of digital tools such as Microsoft Excel and Knowmia to collect, analyze and interpret student achievement data that is housed on various government websites. Second, the Knowmia presentation of the data overview along with the summaries of each of the charts indicates my ability to effectively communicate findings in the data. Lastly, the listing of the strengths and weaknesses along with the exploratory questions at the end of the presentation demonstrate my ability to implement appropriate interventions to improve instructional practice and to maximize student learning in 9th grade literature and composition.
Completing this artifact was tedious but worth every minute of it. My Excel skills have been tested and I now feel prepared to move deeper into data analysis. I also feel that using the public domain sites gave me practice for future analysis. I do however feel like I would have liked to do a more specific data overview that would explore data deeper and really assess some of the specifics of students learning contained on this test. The overview I completed for this course was general.
The work that went into creating this artifact will impact school improvement, faculty development, and student learning. In completing a data overview, many items are overturned that can only help faculty develop skills to improve the student learning which subsequently improves the school. The assessment of this impact would be seen in EOCT score improvements in the identified areas that needed change.
