Artifact: Multimedia Design Project/Webquest
Reflection:
The artifact that I have chosen for the reflection of instructional design is the Multimedia Design Project from ITEC 7445. This project was creating using the ADDIE instructional design model and it demonstrates my ability to use instructional design effectively to create instruction. For this assignment, I used an ADDIE template and the ADDIE method to create a webquest with a peer teacher for an International Baccalaureate class in the new IB Career Pathway Diploma program at Marietta High School. In this project, students were learning about ethics and decision making as it applies to them personally, professionally, culturally, and globally. The culminating project for this diploma program is a paper and or project in which the student addresses an ethical dilemma in his or her career pathway, the reflective essay. This multimedia design project was created as a webquest on Weebly. The webquest we created, contained videos, news articles, interactive games and journal articles demonstrating personal, professional, cultural, and global ethical decision making. This webquest format gave the students the opportunity to direct their learning and engage in interactive activities that required them to make difficult, real-world decisions. Students were required to complete reflective blogs and engage in active discussions with their peers and teachers online and in class along the way. The end result was to give them the knowledge they needed to approach their career pathway ethical dilemma from the real world and apply their learning from the webquest.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of the instructional design ADDIE model. In creating this lesson we systematically followed the five steps of the model. This artifact is a template of our use of each step of the model to create our webquest. The template shows Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Each step is detailed with the work that we completed. For the analysis section, we looked at our goals, learners, and standards. In the design step, we selected a wide variety of sources from interactive simulators that walk students through an ethical decision-making process, to an online self-assessment designed to also teach about theory, to TED videos, on-line articles, news clips, and editorial cartoons. Each one was chosen in order to give student practice with the content in multiple formats. In order to ensure that students have a deep understanding, we felt that they needed multiple interactions with the content. Each interaction built on the previous, which is why the students are asked to complete this in the order it is presented. In the development stage, we outlined what we wanted to occur on paper and we used this outline to create the webquest in weebly. The webquest was sequential and easy to follow. In the implementation stage, we introduced the lesson together with a group activity that activated their learning and curiosity. We then took them through the webquest and explained the expectations. For the evaluation step, rubrics were included in the webquest for student evaluation, but for the evaluation of the entire multimedia design we carefully monitored the students while the worked through the project and asked them if there was content or requirements that needed clarification.
In completing this artifact I learned when creating a project like this it is best to work very closely with the lead teacher to create the website and to find the resources. By doing this it enables you to make sure that the content helps drive the instructional goals. The ADDIE model is terrific tool for creating instruction and it is something that I have used again with other teachers in my school. It has helped me to create more authentic learning experiences and to focus on all aspects of the learning process.
The work that went into creating this artifact impacted student learning in the Approaches to Learning classes. The impact of this artifact can be assessed not only in the completion of the webquest but in the completion of the reflective essays students in this diploma program went on to complete.
