Artifact: Diversity and Global Awareness in the Media Center
Reflection:
The artifact that I have chosen that best reflects my ability to model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness is my diversity blog entry that I created in ITEC 7430. The title of my blog is, “Diversity and Global Awareness in the Media Center.”
This blog entry demonstrates my recognition of diversity in the media center and work I do to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness. All students have a story and I try to get to know as many of these stories as I can in order to reach out and meet the needs attached to these stories. In purchasing materials for the school media center I take in to account the cultural and diverse learning styles at Marietta High School. I make sure to purchase learning and reading materials that meet these needs. Different leveled readers, different types of media, diverse protagonists, different cultures, and different interest levels are all criteria that I use when making purchases. My blog entry explains the how, what, and why of our purchases to reflect our population.
We also help students to reach out and blog and Skype with individuals from different countries. Marietta High School is a proud IB School. IB schools are found all over the world and their curriculum emphasizes a global diverse education. Helping the students at Marietta High interact with other students and educators in countries outside of the United States helps increase global and cultural awareness.
After creating this blog, I have come to the realization that reflective writing helps me not only take stock of the activities I have accomplished; it also helps me decide in what direction I need to continue going. From this blog and the reading I did to complete it, I am proud of what I have done to embrace diversity but will be looking at other ways to take this further. Possibly working with other media specialist/librarians around the world to learn about their jobs and cultures or setting up more Skype activities with students and teachers around the world for collaboration.
A media center that supports diversity and global awareness impacts school improvement, faculty development, and student learning. School improvement, faculty development, and student learning are all impacted when diversity is embraced, acknowledged, and celebrated.
